A Style Inspiration... DESI HIP HOP

A Style Inspiration: Desi Hip HopThis year when I travelled India, I felt rising of the Indian version of Hip Hop. It was in the music culture, in the movies and basically everywhere else. Be it Divine, Raja Kumari, Naezy, Ace, Dopeadilcz, rapping in local languages about the social problems and life has made an impact on the people, culture and fashion. This soulful amalgamation of cultures with elements of Hip Hop caught my eye and is certainly inspiring. The Indian hip hop or Desi Hip Hop as they say is term used for music, culture and fashion that combines the influences of hip hop and the Indian sub continent. Its an Urban contemporary derivative.hiphopdesiHip Hop culture, graffiti, b-boying started seeping into street culture of big cities like Delhi and Mumbai from early 2000s. And it has led to a completely different viewpoint on fashion inspired by this culture.hip hop2If we look at the basics of hip hop clothing, there’s cargo jeans, hoodies, high ankle shoes or sneakers, flat caps and bandanas. And now we are looking at denims with printed slogans, mens harem pants, bindi(small dot on forehead representing hindu culture for women) and traditional jewellery mixed and matched with jackets and baggy jeans.hh4hh2Its inspiring to explore so many different permutations and combinations of the elements of this fusion, also because of the contrast in the styles of the individual styles of hip hop and South Asia. The former being bold and opinionated, the latter is more subdued and classical. When they come together the style could be unique and relatable to people that are from South Asia as well as love hip hop or completely random people who love the beauty of this unadulterated contrast coming together!rk1
